Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids Explained

Good Fat and Bad Fat:

Not all fat is bad for you and we require certain types of fat as part of a healthy diet. The problems we hear about with fat and diet is that many people eat too much of the wrong kinds of fat.

Fats in our diet consist of two basic types – saturated fats and unsaturated fats. Most dieticians and nutritionists recommend that we limit our intake of saturated fat as much as possible, hence the usual advice to trim the fat from beef, pork and chicken.

Unsaturated fats include a very important group of dietary fats called polyunsaturates. It is this group that includes omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids. They are called essential because our bodies cannot make omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. They must be obtained from foods we eat. Omega-3 fatty acids are found almost exclusively in marine animals and plants.
